How to become a good singer without taking lessons?

I would like to feel better about singing around people like in the car or in church. How do you become a good singer?

Think of singing like sustained speaking. It’s really no different. People make singing this impossibly hard thing when really it’s not that different than just talking. Learn to take deep breaths from your stomach (not your chest) and try to hold your breath while you sing (ideally you should not omit very much breath while you are singing). Do not try to imitate other singers! You should try singing songs in different ranges (low, medium and high) and figure out what range you are most comfortable in. For me, it’s a very high range like where Charlotte Church sings. For you, it could be way down low where Tony Braxton sings–I don’t know. Anyways, figure out where your voice lies and practice songs that are more or less in that range. You should also get a music book to help you learn more about musical terminology. Being a good singer doesn’t just mean opening your mouth and sounding beautiful–it takes a lot of knowledge of music and terminology. If you can invest in getting a good coach, I highly recommend it. A trained professional will be able to guide your voice in the right direction.

  3. Every time you get a chance to sing go for it. It will help develop your vocal cords, thus making you a better singer.

Of you could carry some sort of auto tune machine with you whenever you plan on singing.

Haha.just kidding on that last part.

  6. Singing takes practice. If you have a song stuck in your head, then sing it. If you hear a song on the radio and you know the words, then sing it. The more you sing, the better you become. Practice practice practice! :)

  7. If you have a laptop, plug in your headphones and turn on your mic and record yourself singing your favorite songs.
Then listen to what you sound like. Make sure that you are relaxed and comfortable. You should hear your natural voice, and your pitch range, and then you could basically work on what you don’t like about it. Keep recording yourself and think about the things that you are trying to fix. Eventually they should become natural habits, and you won’t have to think about them.

  8. hi sonya, i have a friend who is a singer and there really is no way you can do it without lessons of some sort… you can try on your own but you will never know if you are doing well without someone critiquing you… send me a message and i can put you in touch with my friend…

  9. drink some lemon juice and honey.
then do the thing where u press a key on the piano and u do that tone, u dont need a piano for this tho u jus go up n down through the tones about 3 or 4 times to warm up ur vocal chords.
also sing from your stomach, not ur throat. when u do this u should feel something in ur tummy vibrate (wiith ur hand), when u feel this hold it in with ur hand (or better as someone else to like the heinrich manouvere and sing from ur stomach
after a bit of practice of this u should be a pro and probably get into the top ten of xfactor or american idol or watever u do
    have fun !

  11. first thing is practise, practise, practise…the more you sing, the better it will get (you should be able to tell when your singing is not so great)

have confidence in yourself. if you are sure of what you are doing, you are more likely to succeed and get better

take big, deep breaths. take soundless, deep breaths because the harsh ones with sound take away energy that should be used for singing

for a more mature sound, sing vertically rather than horizontally

if you want opinions, make some videos of you singing and post here and/or Youtube

    good luck :D
