1. Tape yourself and playback for both yourself and others to hear. Don’t tell them what they’re about to hear. The criticism will be tough if they don’t know who’s singing and you’ll either learn from it or decide that singing is not for you.
2. Join a choir or singing group in a local church or club. A big part of singing is singing with others, preferably in harmony. (ie, different parts) Practicing with other singers and musicians produces rapid improvement, especially if it’s a competitive environment. The Beatles improved much because of the fierce competitiveness between John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
3. Listen to good singers and sing along. As a former singing group leader I learned that the most effective way to sing better is to sing a lot. Listening alone will never produce good singing. Best wishes. Your girlfriend will give you an A for effort until you get better!

Lessons are absolutely the best option. However, when I decide to take a break from lessons, I use Ariella Vaccarino's Voice Lessons To Go cds. She gives you good exercises to strengthen your voice.

you need discipline like start singing for 1 hour every day of the week than do it for 2 hours that will make your vocal cords be fine.

You’ll need lessons.
There is absolutely no way to just magically improve your voice on your own.
