Can I interchange Singer sewing machine attachments with different brands of sewing machines?

I have a box of Singer (and Grist) sewing machine attachments and I want to get a machine I can use with it. Is it ok to get a different brand of machine and use Singer attachments?

Whether or not you can use an attachment on a different machine depends on the attachment and the machine. For instance, you can’t use a buttonholer intended for a Singer 301 (a slant-shank machine) on a Singer 15 (short shank). You’ll have to compare the shank length and width of the attachments to what candidate machines need. Swapping brands of attachments on pre-1970s machines can be particularly tricky because of the lack of standardization between and within brands.

  3. They are probably too old of a style for machines made today.

You can check the shank length of the old ones with this chart (today’s machines are low shank).

Today’s machines come with many attachments and if needed there are generics that will fit, or you can purchase from a SM dealer.
