What educational background do you have in history, theology and philosophy? I want to know, once and for all, why you think you’re more knowledgeable than the Pope about Christianity that Catholics must listen to you than listen to the Pope?

That was a change I had to make when I became Catholic. I had to put aside my pride. I had to admit that my few years of study was not equal to the thousands of years of scholarship that the Catholic church has behind it. I had to admit I did not know everything and that just possibly the Catholic church knew better than me. I finally had to accept that "Rome has spoken" and accept certain things even though I did not understand them and my upbringing made me want to reject them.

@American Imperialist: The reason the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) was chosen as First amongst Equals had to do with the nature of the power structure at the time Christianity was forming. Essentially, Rome was 2000 years ago what New York City is today: the unofficial capital of the world. Back then if you wanted to announce something to the world, you did it out of Rome. Since the Schism, the Patriarch of Constantinople has been referred to in Orthodoxy as the First among equals. However, one must also be aware of Jerusalem being the Mother of All Churches.

You don’t need an advanced degree to read the Bible and see where it contradicts Catholic doctrine. When you think about it, would God have made His Word so complicated that it was out of reach to the very people He came to save? No, of course not. He wants us to read His word, understand it, and believe it.
Besides, there are evangelical seminary professors whose education in theology, Greek, and ancient history is *far* superior to the Pope’s. Why don’t Catholics listen to them?

All Christians whether Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox need to compare what they are told by their religious leaders with what the first apostles taught which has been preserved for us in the Bible. However, many have gone astray by relying too much on their own interpretations. One should take into consideration the guidance of the church. But, be careful if a church’s doctrine is from interpretations of scripture based on outside traditions or "prophetic writings" not found in the Bible. Everything you need to know to form a close relationship with God is in the plain text of the Bible. Anything beyond this is open to the deceptions of Satan.
