What is the difference between a melody and an instrumental song?

Actually, what exactly is a melody? Is a melody the "sound" behind a singer’s voice? But what about an instrumental song then? Isn’t it the same? And what is the difference between song and melody? Or are they the same?

You are thinking of Melody and Harmony. Melody is the main ‘tune’ the theme that you’d whistle or sing along with.

Harmony is the background music more or less. The chords and rhythms that accompany the main ‘tune’.

You usually have both whether it is an instrumental piece or a song that is sung. This site helps give you a better idea.

Melody can be used figuratively to mean song. A melody is a series of notes played consecutively. A song can have more than one melody, like a guitar riff and vocal melody. Harmony is when you play or sing a second (or more) set of notes in time with a melody. The harmony blends into the background because the ratios in the melody are more dominate than the ratios of the harmony. All note combinations have ratios, for example C to G is 2/3. Simple ratios tend to dominant.
An instrumental is a song without vocals, like Satch Boogie or The Cliffs of Dover.
Melodies are the parts in the song you tend to remember.

  3. The melody is the tune that is sung by a solo singer or soprano singer. An instrumental is something played on an instrument or instruments with no one singing. The melody is part of a song. A song does not have more than one melody, but sometimes the melody can be in the bass instead of the soprano.
