i do the same!! I'm 14 and i like listening to classical music. I would recommend pieces from Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Johann Sebastian Bach. Actually listening to classical music makes you smarter, this is what we call "Mozart Effect." It says there that listening to Mozart's music may induce a short-term improvement on the performance of certain kinds of mental tasks known as "spatial-temporal reasoning;" so I absolutely advice you to listen to more classical songs and don't mind those people who can't appreciate songs like that. We all have different tastes.
References :
Mozzart Effect: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozart_effect

Classical music is for everyone, and makes excellent background music to stimulate your mind while you're studying. Try something not too intrusive .. maybe some solo piano ... something like Fiona Laskaris's "Herald of the Morning", "The White Egret" and "Windless Sky".
References :
good tchaikovsky or vivaldi always helps...

classical music is perfectly fine while doing homework/studying...my friend did a science fair experiment on that and it showed that classical music helps!!!

classical music is not only for older people; younger people, like little kids and even young teenagers love listening to classical -- that is, if they hadn't heard pop/rock/rap/hip-hop first!!! (;
References :
Great ! I suggest light airy Mozart chamber music because something with big sound distracts more than helps. Did you know there are studies that babies increase their thinking process listening to mozart?
I believe those who peg classical music as an old persons thing have been indoctrinated by the Nickelodeon and music channels.
I am an 80 year old who plays and conducts his own music. My students are famous worldwide and they are not old folks.
References :
pro

Music For Life by Hi-Tek featuring Nas and Common.

It's basically a tale of how music saved these young black guys from a life of crime.

Here's a verse:

My whole life man is really music
Through my bass line, I'm livin' through it
Another expression of life, I couldn't live without it
I like my music pure, not watered down
DAMN!, it felt good to fulfill the dreams of gettin' out the hood
Kept me busy, gave me a chance to stop sellin' drugs
Spinnin' time in the basement kept me from actin' up

Youtube it, its a good song.
References :
Prior to WWII, "Albums" were collections of Grammaphone-78's in a booklet resembling a photo album, rarely more than four records to a set. The only thing that came close was an experimental 33 rpm Long-Play Grammaphone record in 1945 by Bing Crosby called Merry Christmas... obviously a collection of traditional Xmas music.

The first record-album (non grammaphone) of original material released by what could conceivably be called a Pop Artist was "The Voice of Frank Sinatra", released on 78 LP disc in 1946 and re-issued as a 33 LP in 1948.

Read up on Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra and the way that they blazed the trail for modern music. They were the first real Pop Idols. It would be interesting for your report to stress the fact that they were the template for Elvis, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson.
